60 starters, 40 finishers
Well, it was an exciting race the whole day. Scott
Eppelman, the course record holder and still the
course record holder, led the race the entire way up
until around mile 86, where I understand he was
overtaken by ultra newcomer, Tim Halder, from Seattle.
An amazing come from behind finish as Tim was over 90
minutes behind the leaders at one point. This was
Tim's first 100 mile run and I think he ran the last
10 miles in just under 90 minutes which is outstanding
considering the course. Scott Eppelman finished with
a strong 2nd place performance followed closely by
Kendall Kreft, Jamie Gifford and Bruce Hoff.
Liz McGoff, from Bozeman, Mt., had a great race and
set the new womens course record of 23:27 and she was
followed by 2nd place finisher, Jana Gustman.
A couple of "special mentions"-----first to Jamie
Gifford who has been training like hell this year to
break 24 hours which he did. Secondly to Jana Gustman
and Dan Bratches. The look on their faces when they
crossed the finish line said it all. Jana had fallen
earlier in the day and finished the race with a broken
hand. I watched Dan limp away at the Hyak aid
station, mile 55, and knew he was in for a long night
and day. Both of them gutted it out and finished with
great times. And thirdly to Brent Spilsbury, who was
the first runner ever to finish the CCC five times and
he was awarded with the coveted silver buckle.
And I would like to thank Ron Behrmann, co-rd and
Tim Stroh, who help out so much with this race. They
are truly wonderful friends.
And last but certainly not the bit least, the
volunteers. Wow. They are truly the best in the
business and a good number of runners always come up
to me at the end of this race and comment on how much
they enjoyed the "helpers." Thank you and thanks
Geri and Darla who came all the way from Arizona.
